What to look for in a pleasure toy

The range of toys available today is nothing short of exhaustive. While it’s of course fantastic to be spoilt for choice, when it comes to sensual pleasure it can also be extremely daunting – especially if you’re just starting out. Not only are we confronted with decisions around shapes, sizes, styles, and functions, but whether they’re safe to use and how exactly to use them.

The range of toys available today is nothing short of exhaustive.

While discovering which toys are for you (or you and your partner) is an awesome personal journey that will take its own direction the further down this wondrous path you venture, there are a few considerations that are worth keeping in mind for any toy you’re planning to buy.

Material matters

While cheap can be cheerful, there are lots of toys on the market that are made of toxic materials, which aren’t body-safe. Any toys claiming to be made from rubber, jelly or gel are an immediate no-go zone as they can be toxic and lead to cancer. These toys are also porous which means they absorb what is on them and are very difficult to properly clean. Avoid any toys you plan to use internally that call out PVC or Vinyl too. Although not toxic themselves, highly toxic plasticizers are used to melt them into toys.

Aside from the real health dangers these tend to have a strong synthetic odour too, which can be a real vibe killer.

To be safe always check that your toys are labelled 100% silicone. You’ll appreciate the silky soft, almost life-like feel you deserve, too.

How does it charge?

These days there’s no need for batteries when it comes to adult pleasure. For the best long-term value, convenience, and the environment, invest in rechargeable toys.

Take things underwater

The bath, shower, or pool is a wonderful place to extend your play. Make sure your toy is waterproof because these days, there’s no need for it not to be.

Silence is golden

Noisy toys aren’t great at adding to your peace of mind. Look for the quieter models and enjoy getting down in more exciting places.

Power is pleasure

This is a simple one - more power equals more pleasure… so… go for the more powerful models that have variations so you can dial things up as and when you’re ready.

Routine will get you killed

The same vibe over and over can work for non-motorised toys but if you’re going for vibrations, variety is absolutely the spice of life! Opt for toys with a range of vibration patterns.

Safety and hygiene are essential

Always remember, safety and hygiene first. Wash your toys with every use - warm soapy water works perfectly well, or get your hands on a quality silicone-friendly adult toy cleaner.

So there you have it people, go forth and enjoy.
