Stress is a part of life. No matter who you are or what your 9-5 looks like, stress will creep in one way or another. Thanks to the COVID19 pandemic, stress is at an all-time high for a lot of people. Budgets have tightened, kids have been home-schooled, relationships have faced tension like never before.

If you’re finding yourself feeling irritable and touchy, and like your tank is running on fumes, why not set aside some time for some stress-relieving self-care?

If you’re finding yourself feeling irritable and touchy, and like your tank is running on fumes, why not set aside some time for some stress-relieving self-care?

We’ve got five genuinely effective ways for you to hit refresh on your life.

Exercise

Roll your eyes if you will, but there is no getting around the fact that the best thing for stress is regular exercise. Experts say that daily bursts of exertion, where your heart  rate increases and you break out a sweat, are necessary for maintaining health - physically and mentally. Not only does cardio activity increase blood flow and circulation, making you look great and think more clearly, it also releases endorphins—AKA Happy Hormones—which give you a wonderful sense of achievement and all-round gladness.

If you find yourself really busy, your fitness regime is usually the first thing to go under. Take a look at your calendar and find a gap to schedule in just 30 minutes of sweat time; you’ll feel amazing and be ready to conquer the world after.

Adventure

Although many of us live tame lives behind our desks, there’s every reason to have a little adventure every now and then, especially when you’ll be impressed by how little change it takes to trick your brain into responding like it would to the getaways and skydiving we might typically think of when we hear the word ‘adventure’.

Just being outdoors is enough to reset your state of mind

You don’t have to be an adrenaline junkie to use this stress-reliever. If you don’t get out much, just being outdoors is enough to reset your state of mind. If you do, change it up. Take a walk in a different direction to what you usually do, go for a swim in the sea, hike a new trail, or visit a coffee spot in a different neighbourhood.

Whatever it is, the goal is simply to do something different that gets your mind off things for a bit. There’s no excuse here, get on it people.

Animals

Animals do wonders for our souls. There is something about cuddling a puppy, stroking a cat or swimming with dolphins that has the ability to make us feel better.

Animals do wonders for our souls

If you don’t have animals at home, think about an animal you’d love to connect with and make a date to spend some time with them. Volunteer at your local animal rescue, book a horse-ride at your nearest stables or splurge on a boat trip to dive with some sea mammals. The respite from your regular activities and the power of bonding with animals will do you the world of good!

Connect

When we’re stressed, often our default setting is to retreat further into the mayhem so that we don’t fall behind. But lack of human contact can actually make stress worse and, without you being conscious of it, make you feel lonely, isolated and unloved—even though none of that is true. Book a little date with a friend and visit your favourite coffee shop or bar. Neither of you may have the time to sit and catch up for hours, but even a short time chatting and having a laugh can restore balance to your world.

A good-old chinwag with a friend boosts self-esteem and eases tension

Researchers have shown that women in particular feel better once they have vocalised with other females, because they feel heard and connected to the social vine. A good-old chinwag with a friend boosts self-esteem and eases tension, so open your calendar and pop a date in with your bestie, pronto!

O-on-the-go

Orgasms are a gift to all humanity. Not only because they feel amazing, but because they do wonders to us physically, mentally, and emotionally. According to Nan Wise, Neuroscientist and certified Sex Therapist, orgasms can improve sleep, increase immunity, and enhance your mood. Think of them as a system reboot.
